According to the Wikipedia Japanese,

It is a resident bird that is divided into two distant areas at the east and western ends of the Eurasian Continent. One of the distributions is East Asia in Russia, Eastern China, Japan etc and the other is part of the Iberian Peninsula. There is a habitat locally, in an enclave state in any region.

In addition, the origin of the Japanese name "Onaga" comes from the long tail of this wild bird. "O" in "Onaga" means the tail, "naga" means long.

 Personally, I do not like this wild bird because this wild bird's voice is a similar feeling like a Eurasian jay which has creepy calls. 

ユーラシア大陸の東西両端の2つの離れた地域に分かれて分布する留鳥である。 分布の一方はロシア東部、中国東部、日本など東アジアで、もう一方はイベリア半島の一部である。いずれの地域においても局所的、飛び地状に生息域が存在する。

ついでに、日本名“Onaga”の由来は、この野鳥の尾羽が長いことから来ています。

“Onaga”の”O”は尾、naga”は長いを意味します。

さらに付け加えれば、この野鳥の鳴き声はカケスと似たような気味の悪い鳴き声なので個人的にはこの野鳥は好きではありません。

It inhabits in Central and South Siberia, Mongolia, China, Japan. Breed in the subarctic and warm zones during the summer, in winter, it will migrate to tropical and temperate areas and overwinter.

It has been said that three kinds of subspecies inhabit in Japan as a resident bird, but subspecies buzzard is of the most observed, inhabit, and breed in the mountainous region in Hokkaido, to the north of central Honshu, and Shikoku.
The name of two other subspecies is Buteo japonicas oshiroi (subspecies Daitonosuri), and Buteo japonicas toyoshimai (subspecies Ogasawaranosuri).

中央・南シベリア、モンゴル、中国、日本に棲息する。夏季は亜寒帯や温帯域で繁殖し、冬季は熱帯や温帯へ渡りをおこない越冬する。

日本では3種の亜種が留鳥として生息していると言われていますが、亜種ノスリは北海道、本州中部以北、四国の山間部で最も多く観察され、生息し、繁殖しています。
他の二亜種の名前は亜種ダイトーノスリと亜種オガサワラノスリです。

It come flying to Japan as a passage migratory bird during at the time of migration in spring and autumn.

In generally, it can be seen in everywhere more in autumn than in spring, because of number of autumn migrant is high.

日本では旅鳥として春と秋の渡りの時期に飛来する。一般的に秋の渡りの数が春より多いので秋にはどこでも見られます。

“Neither heat nor cold lasts beyond the equinox”

The idiomatic phrase expressing the climate of Japan has " Neither heat nor cold lasts beyond the equinox“, It say that lingering summer heat and lingering cold will continues to until around the spring and autumn equinox, and its climate become mild when passing beyond its Higan.

It seems that the origin of the name of Higanbana has become the origin of the Japanese name of this flower because it begins to bloom in autumn's Higan.

Higan(two period of seven days with the middle day falling on the spring or autumn equinox):the word higan meaning”the other shore,”in Buddhism,nirvana.

During higan the spirits of ancestors are recalled. Buddhist rites carried out and family graves visited.(quote from NIPPON,The Land and Its People)

日本の気候を表す慣用句に「暑さ寒さも彼岸まで」があり、残寒・残暑は彼岸のころまで続き、彼岸をすぎるとやわらぐという。ヒガンバナの名前の由来は秋のヒガンの頃咲き始めるのでこの花の日本名の由来となったらしい。
