6月から7月にかけて開花し、白、青、紫または赤色のが大きく発達した装飾花をもつ。ガクアジサイではこれが花序の周辺部を縁取るように並び、園芸では「額咲き」と呼ばれる。ガクアジサイから変化し、花序が球形ですべて装飾花となったアジサイは、「手まり咲き」と呼ばれる。

日本、ヨーロッパ、アメリカなどで観賞用に広く栽培され、多くの品種が作り出されている。原産地は日本で、ヨーロッパで品種改良されたものはセイヨウアジサイと呼ばれる。

なお、本種は有毒植物であるため、園芸や切り花として利用する際には取り扱いに注意が必要である。
