It distributes in Indonesia (northern Sumatra Island, Borneo Island), Cambodia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, eastern Myanmar, and Laos.
During the summer, it breeds in the eastern part of China,
when it comes the winter, it migrates to the south toward to Southeast Asia, and overwinter.
The English name "Chinese " in "Chinese pond heron" comes from breeding in China.
It inhabits in the southern part of China annually.
In Japan, a few migrate as winter bird for wintering to the Nansei Islands.
There is also an overwintering record in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture.

The image of the Chinese pond heron installed this time is a well-known place in Ibaraki prefecture where several species have formed colonies for many years. As a reported extra case on breeding of the outdoors here, it is that is about the Cross-breed on Chinese pod heron and Little egret. The researcher says that there are only three in cases in the world,
