Happy New Year! Hoping that all your wishes come true!

It is a custom of this country to visit a shrine or temple at the beginning of the New Year

This is called Hatsumode in Japanese.

Many visits on the first, second, or third day of the year as most are off work on those days. Generally, wishes for the new year are made, new omamori (charms or amulets) are bought, and the old ones are returned to the shrine so they can be burned. For these three days, it can be seen long lines in each shrine for worship.

Some shrines and temples have millions of visitors over the three days.

More than 3 million people are expected to pay their respects at Meiji Jingu during the first 3 days of 2019.

People in Japan have rung in the New Year with celebrations across the country. In Japan, 2019 is a special year, as Crown Prince Naruhito will ascend the throne in May. That will mark the start of a new era and the end of the current one, which is called "Heisei."
