Moreover, in Japan, it is classified as extinction (CR) on the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, and it has been bred and released from two facilities at present.

 Oriental storks in Japan were no longer seen except for individuals released from artificial breeding facilities from Toyooka and Noda city, or extremely few individuals flying from the continent as a vagrant bird. It is said that the number of individuals decreases in the world and it is in danger of extinction.

生息地の喪失および狩猟のし過ぎのために、コウノトリはIUCN国際自然保護連盟のレッドリストで絶滅の危機に瀕していると分類され、また、日本では、日本の環境省レッドリストで絶滅寸前（ＣＲ）に分類されおり、現在2か所の施設で繁殖され放鳥されている。

日本国内のコウノトリは豊岡市、野田市の人工繁殖施設から放鳥された個体か迷鳥として大陸から飛来する極めて少ない個体以外見られなくなった。世界でもその個体数が減少して絶滅の危機にあると言われます。
